The Purnaa Team

Meet Chamaly

by Sonja Kraft

Congratulations, you won the employee of the month award! How did you feel when you found out that you won?

I felt very happy. I used to feel like I didn’t know anything about sewing, so I was very happy because I felt appreciated for my hard work.

Who is your favorite actor or actress?

Anmol K.C. is my favorite actor and Rekha Thapa is my favorite actress.

What is your favorite food?

I really like milk, meat and fruit. My favorite fruit is bananas.

What is your favorite color?

Black

What is your favorite machine at Purnaa?

The overlock machine because it is easy to use and I know how to set up the threads for the machine.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to knit whenever I have woolen threads. I like to make hats and scarves.

Tell us about your family.

I got married when I was 20 years old. My husband passed away when our daughter was only two years old. She is my only daughter and she is now 22 years old. After my husband passed away, my daughter and I moved to Kathmandu and I began working. When my daughter was 16 I got very sick. I went to the hospital and found out I had tuberculosis. I was so sick and so thin. My landlord told my daughter not to bring me back to our place because I was going to pass away. The hospital doctors told me I couldn’t be healed. During that time, a lady from Assa Nepal was at the hospital and I got connected with her and moved there. Assa Nepal gives shelter to widows and single mothers who are struggling. I didn’t know anything about Jesus Christ, but when I was staying at Assa Nepal I learned about him. I started to believe in him, started praying, and six months later I was healed.

What is your job at Purnaa?

I am a sewer on Gopi’s team.

What is it like to work in that role?

I feel confident in my role. I try to do my best at whatever I am assigned to do.

How long have you worked at Purnaa?

It’s been around nine months. When I started at Purnaa I was working in the kitchen for two months and then got moved to a sewing team.

What do you like about Purnaa?

I like Purnaa’s values, especially the value of love. I see the people here loving and helping each other every day.

What did you do before you worked at Purnaa?

Before I worked at Purnaa I took care of the little children at Asha Nepal. I would take them to school and if they got sick I would take them to the hospital. It was fun, but it was my only option for a job.

What is different here from other places you have worked?

I don’t have any experience at other garment factories, but I am enjoying it here and I like everything about it.

How have you changed as a person since working here?

The biggest change is that I don’t have to ask anyone for money. If I need food or want to buy something I don’t have to ask anyone.

What are some ways you want to grow in your work?

I would like to learn how to use all of the machines. I especially want to learn to use the consign. I am eager to learn it, but I haven’t tried yet.

What dreams do you have for the future?

My aim is to learn as much as possible so I can stand on my own and teach others what I know.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I enjoy everything about Purnaa. Other companies don’t always give two days off a week or health reimbursement and Purnaa does those things. If we ask Purnaa for help with expenses, they will provide. If an emergency comes up, there are many people ready to help you.
